Since the introduction of the new United Kingdom Passport in October 2010 there are several new security features, e.g. a chip, watermark, biographical page and a secondary image – all covered in a new design which brings UK passports in line with other EU country passport designs.
These new features were necessary, according the the UK Identity and Passport Service. to “ensure that the UK passport remains a highly secure and trusted document meeting rigorous international standards”.
It should be noted that some countries – notably the USA – will only admit holders of biometric passports. These passports are identifiable by the addition of the biometric logo to the front cover.
On UK passports, the logo is gold on a purple background. Other countries may differ.
